I was using Ning heavily until they changed their position in the market.
Some uses were family sites. I’m an expat from the USA living and working from South America and it gave be a chance to keep up easily with family in a protected (enclosed) environment. My wife’s family is spread out throughout South America and Europe, so she had the same outcome.
I also liked Ning for creating tightly niche specific social networks. As Ning changed it’s financial direction, I started creating WP-BuddyPress sites and migrated those niche-specific Ning populations onto my new social networks.
There are a couple of Ning sites which I continue to use, because they are specific to my needs and they were large enough that they were already funded sites on Ning.

Ning is a great open platform for building a business or personal following or creating a media platform of your choosing as well. Last I heard they were going to start charging for some services but I don’t know for sure if that ever happened. Hopefully all the great comments above will help! Thanks, Rob

I used a Ning platform for a few years and it was sort of succesful, but I found most of my members just went back to Facebook.
They are now charging a monthly fee, so I am letting this website finish up.
Just not enough action there for me.

A lot of the time I use Ning and I don’t even realise it. It’s uses increasingly for blogs and forums but with all the different skins available it’s hard to tell!
I mainly use Ning as a portal for a local tennis club I’m involved in.

Frankly, I tried it once and it wasn't effective for my needs (providing a tool for educators to share free printable worksheets with colleagues. Probably, for some other, not so specific community, such social network as Ning will work just great.

I know some who use a variety of social sites, so it requires me to maintain accounts at many different networking sites. A bit of a pain really.

However, it can be quite overwhelming trying to keep track of so many accounts and who I’m communicating with on each.
Someday, someone may invent a better solution.
